Arrival and Bucharest tour
Pick up your car rental from the airport and start your holiday in Romania with a tour of its capital, Bucharest. You will spend your first day here, so you have several options. After you check-in at your hotel, go on a self-guided walking tour in the old town of Bucharest or take your car and drive on the main boulevards.
The Parliament Palace
Don’t forget to visit the Parliament Palace. The Parliament Palace or the House of the People, as it was called during the communist regime, is one of the largest buildings in the world, with an area of 330,000 square meters and more than 3,000 rooms.
Built in the 1980s, it is the second-largest administrative building after the Pentagon. The palace is spectacular both outside and inside, decorated with luxurious furniture, colourful mosaics, massive doors, imposing sculptures, marble stairs and chandeliers and crystal lamps.
The Village Museum
Another attraction you can visit in Bucharest is the Village Museum. On the shores of Lake Herastrau, right in the middle of the Romanian capital, the visitors from everywhere, have the joy of meeting here a real “village”, with monuments and artefacts from the seventeenth century to the early twentieth century.
The “Dimitrie Gusti” National Village Museum in Bucharest opened its doors in 1936. The permanent exhibition covers an area of 14 ha with 380 monuments, 60,000 objects in heritage collections and more than 250,000 archival documents regarding the village and its traditional life.
In the evening take a walk on Calea Victoriei, the main boulevard in Bucharest or enjoy a drink in the old town.

Bucharest to Transylvania driving
Transfagarasan is known as the most beautiful road in the world and indeed has some breathtaking landscapes!
Cisnadioara citadel
On the way to Sibiu, you can stop to visit an old citadel in Transylvania, the Cisnadioara citadel (in Autumn the colours around it are magic). The fortress of Cisnadioara is one of the oldest and most representative monuments of the Romanesque style in Transylvania. It was built of stone between 1162 and 1223. In the centre of the fortification above the village is one of the oldest churches in the country. You must climb the hill if you want to see it.
Sibiu
After visiting the Cisnadioara fortress, go to Sibiu and check-in at your hotel. In the afternoon you will have time to explore the medieval city of Sibiu, the former cultural European capital. You will discover here its narrow streets, old buildings, historical walls and cosy cafes. Sibiu is one of the most beautiful cities in the region and it will be your host for the first part of this road trip in Transylvania.

Day 2
Alba Iulia and the Corvin Castle
After breakfast, it is time to continue your 7 days in Transylvania and hit the road. Take your car and drive to Alba Iulia.
Alba Iulia citadel
The day will start with a walk in the white citadel of Romania, Alba-Iulia. Alba Iulia is a star-shaped citadel full of history and beautiful meaning for the Romanian people. Here took place the big Unification of Romania after the First World War, on 1 December 1918. This date became later the national day of Romania. But the Alba Iulia’s history goes back until the Roman period.
Corvin castle
In the afternoon, it is time to go to Hunedoara. Hunedoara is a small city in Transylvania with an industrial background. But here you can visit Corvin Castle. Corvin Castle is a medieval jewel that remained intact and it is one of the most beautiful castles in Europe. You can walk on its wooden bridge, explore its dark interiors, and visit the torture museum just outside the entrance. in the evening come back to Sibiu.

Day 3
Biertan fortified church & Sighisoara citadel
Biertan fortified church
In the morning you can start with a visit to the big fortified church in Biertan, a small citadel in an isolated village. The fortified church in Biertan is the best known and most visited of the Saxon churches in Transylvania.
It was built in the 12th century and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Situated on top of a hill, the fortified church of Biertan was built in late Gothic style on the foundations of an earlier Romanesque building. Visit its interior and take also a walk in the charming village.
Sighisoara citadel
The afternoon will be used for a slow walk through beautiful old houses, knights and artistic shops in the citadel of Sighisoara. Sighisoara is considered the largest medieval fortress in Europe inhabited without interruption. It is also the best-preserved city-fortress in Transylvania, which has become a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. Explore its narrow streets and let its medieval charm get you!
In the evening come back to Sibiu.

Day 4
Fagaras citadel and Brasov
Fagaras Citadel
On the way to Brasov, you will admire the beautiful Carpathian mountains. Stop and visit the Fagaras fortress to discover its dark history. Fagaras Fortress is one of the largest and best-preserved medieval fortresses in Eastern Europe. It is known as “the fortress that was never conquered” – from the year 1500 until the middle of the century. XIX was besieged 15 times without success!
Brasov city
In the afternoon you will enjoy the mix of old towers, ancient buildings, modern pubs and nature in Brasov. This city has something for everybody! According to statistics, Brasov is the most visited city in Romania, with visitors being a large number of foreign tourists.
Brasov was founded by the Teutonic Knights in 1211 and is considered an ancient settlement. Fortunately, we can still admire the very well-preserved medieval architecture, even today.

Bran Castle and Rasnov citadel
Bran Castle
First, you will visit the best-known castle in Transylvania: Bran Castle. It is known as the famous count Dracula’s castle. Bran Castle, known for its connection with count Dracula, will tell you its story and reveal its secrets.
Dracula is a fictional character. Its name derives from the nickname given to Vlad Ţepeş, ruler of Wallachia in the medieval era. For political reasons, historians of the time describe him as a ruthless, bloodthirsty despot, which inspired Bram Stoker to create his character.
Bran Castle is a medieval building. Last century, the Brașov City Council donated the castle to Queen Maria of Romania. That is why its history is closely linked to that of the Romanian royal family.
Rasnov citadel
On the way back from Bran castle, you can stop and visit Rasnov fortress, another beauty. The first mention of the fortress dates from 1335, on the occasion of a new invasion of the Tartars. Located on the commercial road that connects Transylvania with Tara Romaneasca, Rasnov became an important transit commercial centre. The view from above is beautiful, so it’s worth going up to the fortress.

One week in Transylvania is enough for you to discover the most famous attractions in the area. If you can stay longer, either add lesser-known destinations to the route, or extend your vacation with a tour of Maramures. If you stay less, we can customize the itinerary accordingly. So, you can have an amazing Transylvania vacation whether you want to spend 3 days or 10 days here.
One day in Sibiu is enough to visit the old center and the well-known attractions of the city. If you can stay for 2 days, do it with confidence. Thus, you will also visit the Astra Museum and other well-known museums in the city. One day is for walking, 2 days are to get to know the city leisurely. From 3 days onwards you can start exploring its surroundings. And there are plenty of places to visit near Sibiu!

Driving in Transylvania it is not very hard. It has good roads and only the main cities are busy. It is important to respect the law and drive carefully. And if you do that you will enjoy passing through small villages and dark woods. The most challenging part of the tour is Transfagarasan. But as alternative, you have the Oltului gorge.
