Unirea salt mine in Slanic Prahova is a mix between the hand of man and nature’s wonders. It is the largest salt mine in Romania and in Europe and it was transformed into a health centre for the treatment of pulmonary diseases in saline air, at 210 meters deep. It is also open for tourists that just want to see how the salt was extracted and to admire the largest chamber of the saline, which is 55 meters high. The access to the Unirea salt mine is made with minibuses.

Did you enjoy your visit to Slanic Prahova and do you want to visit other salt mines in Romania? If you have more days, you can also visit the Turda salt mine, voted the coolest underground attraction in the world.

In the afternoon, after the salt mine, you will have the opportunity to walk in a lunar landscape, visiting the Romania muddy volcanoes. Before arriving there you will have a break for lunch in a recommended restaurant. After enjoying your lunch it is time to see the biggest Muddy volcanoes in Romania.

Unirea salt mine in Slanic Prahova

The muddy volcanoes in Berca, Buzau county, form the biggest area of this type in Romania. Read more about them here. The muddy volcanoes tour includes Paclele Mari and Paclele Mici, two geological and botanical reservations. They both have small volcano-shaped structures caused by the eruption of mud and natural gases that come from 3000 meters deep. Near these volcanoes the soil is sulfurous and salty, so the scenery looks like a desert or like the Moon’s surface.  That makes it a special place.

Want to see other natural wonders in Romania? Book our Mud volcanoes and the living stones day trip from Bucharest.

Salt move in it’s more functional state. Muddy volcanoes surrounded by lush green forest makes it seem like a movie set.

f you are looking at doing something completely different, this is the tour. Florin is an amazing guide, who speaks english very well and is more than happy to accommodate to what you want. I love taking pictures and he didn’t mind me asking him a million times, he would actually make sure they looked good. Salt mines and muddy volcanoes takes you a different reality. I totally recommend it!

I consider this tour one of the highlights during my entire Romania trip. My guide was very helpful – not only as driver but also as tutor through the highways and byways of Romanian nature and Romanian history.
