What to see in Romania in 1 week?

Welcome to Bucharest

Bucharest, the capital of Romania, was once called “little Paris”. Its mixture of old houses, communist blocks and modern skyscrapers makes it an interesting place to visit. So, welcome to Bucharest!

The guide will pick you up from the airport and transfer you to your hotel. You will have the rest of the day free to relax or to explore on your own.

You will spend your night in a city centre located hotel in Bucharest.

Day 1

Guided tour in Bucharest

You will have a full day to discover Bucharest. After breakfast, take a long walk in the old town. Find out more about the history of the city and admire its architectural style. Your guide will share you interesting stories about the many events that sculpture the face of Bucharest as you see it today.

A tour in Bucharest wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Parliament Palace. The second largest building in the world and the heaviest dominates the urban landscape. And once you see it, it is hard to believe that its underground is at large as its exterior. Inside you will see some of the large chambers and opulent decorations.

After a panoramic tour by car, your next stop will be at the Village Museum. Gathering houses from all the regions in Romania, this open-air museum is always a nice surprise after the busy city. A visit inside will make you familiar with the Romanian traditions and the way many peasans live.

Day 2

Peles Castle, Bran Castle and Brasov

It is time to leave Bucharest behind and continue your one-week itinerary in Romania with some castles. After breakfast, you will go to Sinaia, a beautiful mountain resort next to Bucegi mountains. Here you will visit the impressive Peles Castle, the summer residence of the Romanian Royal family. Not only the opulent interiors and the external decorations will impress you, but also the natural landscape surrounding the castle.

Your next stop will be in Bran to visit the most famous castle in Romania: Bran castle. This medieval fortress gained its fame due to the vampire novel Dracula by Bram Stocker. Today it is known as Dracula’s castle. A tour inside will reveal you what is the truth about the many legends surrounding the castle.

In the afternoon you will go to Brasov, a beautiful medieval city. Explore its old town, enjoy a late lunch at one of its traditional restaurants and take a long walk next to the forest. Breathing the fresh air of the mountain will due marvels for your sleep!

Your tour in Romania continues today with other medieval wonders. After breakfast it is time to go to Sighisoara. On the way, stop in Viscri, a remote village that made King Charles III fall in love with Romania. Here you can visit the white fortified church, UNESCO heritage site and wander on its large streets framed by colorful houses. You can also stop for lunch in one of the villagers courtyard.

In the afternoon go to Sighisoara, a medieval fortress built on top of the hill. Its well-preserved houses, defence towers and old churches made it a UNESCO heritage site. You will spend the nigh here.

Its local coffee shops and restaurants with international cuisine will offer you a culinary experience.

In the afternoon you will arrive in Turda. Go underground to visit one of the best-known natural attractions in Transylvania: Turda salt mine. Compared often with a subterranean amusement park, the Turda salt mine has a football field, ping pong tables and even a lake for boat rides, all in a salt cave.

In the evening you will stay at a cosy hotel in Turda.

And its history is even more impressive than its exterior!

Your second stop on this day will be in Alba Iulia. Alba Iulia, that star-shaped citadel dates back from Roman times. During a walking tour inside it you will see its Roman and Austrian influences. Aldo, you will find out why it is a very important city in the history of Romania.

In the evening, go to Sibiu, the last city hosting you in Transylvania. You will spend the night here

Day 6

Sibiu and back to Bucharest

Before showing you how you can spend 12 days in Romania, let’s answer some questions. These are questions that you may have before any self-drive trip in Romania.

    Driving in Romania

Is it safe to drive through Romania?

Romania is unfortunately in the last places in the EU in terms of road accidents and the victims resulting from them. But if you follow the traffic rules, driving in Romania becomes a safe and even a pleasant experience. Once you get behind the wheel, it is important to respect the speed limits. It is also mandatory to use a seat belt and a child seat for smaller passengers. Do not drive under the influence of alcohol and do not use your mobile phone while driving. The legislation has zero-tolerance for alcohol consumption when driving. Also, pay attention to pedestrians, animals, cyclists and horse-drawn carriages. They could be traveling on the same road as motor vehicles, especially in rural areas.

    Does Romania have good roads?

Romania has a total of almost 90,000 km of roads divided into national roads, county roads and communal roads. Highways (just under 1000 km in total) are part of national roads. Therefore, a road trip in Romania can take longer than one in countries with several highways. National roads and most county roads are in good condition, with a few exceptions. That is why it is important to plan your trip according to the road restrictions, the condition of the roads and the congested areas. Some national roads become extremely crowded because they connect the important cities of Romania, but you can avoid congestion if you know when to pass by there.

Do you have to wear a seatbelt in Romania?

The seat belt must be worn in Romania by all passengers of a car. Driving a car without wearing a seat belt is categorised as a class I fine and is punishable by a fine and penalty points. Passengers in a vehicle can also receive the same penalty if they do not wear a seat belt. Exceptions to this rule are only pregnant women and people with a medical certificate that exempts them from wearing a seat belt.

What is the speed limit in Romania?

Speed limits are indicated in kilometres per hour. The other road signs including distance are indicated using meters or kilometres because Romania uses the metric system. The speed limits in Romania are: 50 km/h – inside the cities or villages (unless the road signs mention something else) 130 km/h – on the motorway 100 km/h – on express, national and European roads 90 km/h – on the other categories of roads, outside the built-up areas

Which side of the road does Romania drive on?

Although there are states and regions where you drive on the left side of the road, accounting for about 35% of the world’s population, in Romania you drive on the right side, as in most areas.

    Can foreigners drive in Romania?

If they are staying for a maximum of 90 days in the country, foreigners can drive in Romania with any international driving license. Not all national driver’s licenses are accepted. For example, U.S. citizens who wish to drive in Romania must have an International Driving Permit in addition to a valid U.S. state drivers’ license.

How easy is it to travel around Romania?

For public transport, Romania has trains and buses. The main cities of the country are well connected, but sometimes the public transport schedule won’t allow you to see as many things as you could by driving. Also, the rural areas are not so well connected, so it is harder to visit the attractions located outside the city without a car. But a good itinerary, excellent planning and a car rental can ensure you the best way to travel around Romania.
